Slipped Disc Symptoms & What To Do About It
In this video, Dr. Brad Wolf talks about Slipped Disc Symptoms and gives you a couple slipped disc exercises that you can do at home. By taking the best care of your back, you can avoid spinal surgery, and live the best life possible. Dr. Wolf explains the components of the disc, its placement, and what happens when you have a “slipped disc.”
The name “Slipped Disc” is actually a misnomer, as the disc never actually ‘slips.’ Instead, when the disc tears from the inside, it causes swelling and protrusion in the weakened fibers of the disc. When the position of the spine is not properly cared for, the center of the disc can begin to swell, putting pressure on the outer wall of the disc. This can can cause pressure and inflammation of the nerve that runs alongside the disc. When this happens, discomfort can only be relieved by taking pressure off of the nerve (retracting the disc away from the nerve).
The positioning of your spine plays the most crucial role in the health of the disc. If we aren’t practicing good spinal architecture and positioning, discs can become damaged through a process of degeneration. The disc has the most balance and stability when it is properly aligned with the spine. By practicing healthy posture for your spinal discs, and keeping the spine in an upright, vertical position, you can begin to let your slipped disc heal.
Often times, when spinal surgery is performed to treat a slipped disc, the protruding portion of the slipped disc is completely removed. The problem with this practice is that when a part of the disc is removed, the disc becomes imbalanced in shape, giving the patient a greater risk to injury and future disc problems.
The second important thing to do to heal a slipped disc, is to manage any inflammation. This can be done with a cold pack applied to the area of inflammation. The third most important step to heal a slipped disc is to strengthen your back and stabilize your body as a whole. When your body is strengthened and stabilized, slipped discs will be in the best possible position for healing.
By applying these three core principles, you can begin to heal your slipped disc, keep your spine healthy and avoid the possibility of spinal surgery!
